CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON

Don't miss the festive party of the year when the streets of Norwich sparkle and music fills the night at the annual Christmas Switch-on.

There'll be a parade with Father Christmas, entertainment in front of City Hall and the switching on of the city centre lights, as well as light projections on Norwich Castle.

The Tunnel of Light also returns this year and will be going live at the same time as the lights in the City. To get in on the action use the hashtag #MyTunnelOfLight on both Twitter and Instagram when posting your photos, and use our very own Geofilter on Snapchat!

Get to the pub nice early to get yourself a drink and secure a good seat (or standing spot) ready to enjoy the evening!

A Sketching On Location Workshop

Do you enjoy looking at the world around you? Would you like to learn how to draw what you see? Why not join artists Julie Bolus and Liz Monahan for 4 hours of drawing fun at the historic Sir Garnet Pub in the heart of Norwich city centre? In this fast-paced workshop, you will have the chance to experiment with a range of materials, learn new ways of looking at the world to help you improve your drawing skills, and, of course, have a laugh and chat with fellow enthusiasts.

After lunch, there will be an opportunity to put into practice your newly-honed drawing skills on location in and around Norwich market.'  Here is what other people thought about the same workshop we did in January

‘As a complete beginner I was slightly worried I would be out of my depth. However, I found the breakdown of the day built my confidence up. Thank you very much – I would suggest people give it a go and I will come to Urban Sketchers – Cheers.’

‘A very enjoyable day of drawing. Enjoyed the outdoor sketching more than I thought. Well organised – liked trying the different mediums. Thank you.’

Some Pink Star Book Launch

A small intimate launch for my chapbook of colour / violence poems 'Some Pink Star'.

In Some Pink Star Sophie Essex explores the correlation between sex and violence, the willingness of either and both. Threading colour references as in the evolution of a bruise, she uses surface tension to hint at greater depths, to construct and deconstruct a body in relationships.

There'll be readings & books & cake. Please join me :)

Let me know if you'd like to read a poem or two.

Free entry.

De Constructing Files: an electronic evening with Giancarlo Erra

De Constructing Files: an electronic evening with Giancarlo Erra

De Constructing Files: an electronic evening with Giancarlo Erra (WARM UP SHOW)

A short(er) warmup setlist for friends and fans, and a chance for some chat and beers.

From 7pm in The George Plunkett Room (upstairs)

Ticket: free entrance!

Electronic music is usually written and based around beats, loops and sequencers. By contrast, mine is written with a classic approach as based around the piano, analogue synthesizers and a string quartet. An Electronic musician’s typical challenge on stage is to make loops and beats ‘playable’ live, while in my case the challenge is the other way around: to deconstruct my recorded music and make loops that can be performed alongside the recordings and as playable parts. I wanted to do this on my own with the most minimal setup possible. The most important thing is to go on stage without any pre-conceived structure and to be able newly rearrange the music every night. A track could last half or twice the original album length; I want to play with the structure rather than just the instruments, and always with a visual counterpart that can change between performances.

This requires a lot of preparation in the studio to enable me to unshackle myself from structure on stage, using one programmable controller to play and loop and control the show, giving me more freedom than the more classic or ‘rock’ approach I’m used to. It’s a completely different mindset for me and a challenge that’s as exciting as it is scary and thrilling!

Combining my former focus on classical music compositions with a contemporary electronic music approach allowed me to finally have the complete freedom to constantly fine tune, define and re-define my music. I’m looking forward to being able to share that experience with an audience outside of the isolation of the studio.

Check out the Facebook event page here.
